Liu trusts the AKG DHT700 D5

Liu Huan

Pop Star Professor.

Some say that teaching is a refuge for those who can’t cut it in the “real” world. Apparently Chinese pop singer Liu Huan didn’t get the memo. The iconic Chinese pop singer, who trusts AKG microphones for his live performances, is also a popular professor who teaches the history of Western music at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Liu’s career spans nearly three decades, an amazing feat for a pop singer and an accomplishment that he attributes to his willingness to take risks and try new genres. “I have been told that lots of people are controlled by their record companies, but there is often an unwillingness on the part (of the musicians) to take the risk of losing an audience,” he said in a China Daily interview. “I don’t feel that way because I believe there will always be someone who wants to listen if you put your heart and soul into it.”

It was a steady stream of theme songs for popular television shows that made Liu a household name throughout China. In fact, one theme song held the top spot on the charts for ten weeks. He emerged on the world stage when he performed the official theme song for the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing. For the 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony he joined Sarah Brightman in singing the official theme song, “You and Me”.

For his live performances Liu trusts the AKG DHT700 Reference Digital Wireless Handheld Transmitter * with a D5 dynamic head. To cover every type of environment, the system provides an ultra-wide bandwidth of 155Hz and a selectable radio output power of 10, 20, 30 or 50mW. The D5 head features AKG’s patented Varimotion diaphragm to deliver crisp sound that punches through powerfully, even on the noisiest stage. It offers high feedback suppression thanks to its supercardiod polar pattern, and a dual shock mount to eliminate mechanical noise.

As successful as Liu has been as an entertainer, teaching remains a central part of who he is. “There doesn’t have to be any contradictions between being a singer and a teacher, although they are totally different jobs,” he told one interviewer. “I can focus on how to make students have more interest in music when I am in class, after that, I do have time to write songs. I am enjoying being a teacher.”

As popular as Liu is as a professor, his many fans across China and throughout the world are, no doubt, grateful that Liu continues to perform and isn’t quite ready to put down his microphone in favor of the lecture hall full time.
