Reality Rock

on 9 June 2014

“Reality rock” – that’s how Finnish rockers Herra Ylppö& Ihmiset describe their music because they favour lyrics that deal with the realities of everyday life. The music is sometimes a lush anthem, other times a hypnotic ballad, and often no-nonsense, hard-driving rock. And all of it is recorded with the help of a range of AKG microphones.

The five-member band has four albums to its credit, two of which went gold on the Finnish charts. Led by vocalist Herra Ylppö, the band also includes Janne Joutsenniemi on bass, Hamid Moeini on guitar, Joona Kukkola on piano and keyboards, and Jukka “Kosmo” Kröger on drums.

That their music is tough to label is no accident. The band thrives on change. In fact, lead vocalist HerraYlppö, in an interview with Finnish website RadioRock, explained that he has the urge to constantly musically renew himself, always seeking new ideas and challenges.

Whatever they play, it’s Kröger’s drums that anchor every song and hook the listener. To deliver the sound accurately during performances, Kröger relies on three different AKG mics. For the kick drum, he uses the AKG D12 VR, a reference large diaphragm dynamic microphone with cardioid polar pattern. Designed specifically for kick drum recording, the mic has a thin diaphragm to enhance low frequency performance. It also features three active filter presets to match its sound shape with the kick drum’s character.

For toms and snare, Kröger uses five AKG C518 Professional Miniature Clamp-On Condenser microphones. Another purpose-built mic for percussion and drums, the C518 has a cardioid polar pattern that rejects overspill from nearby instruments. An integrated, switchable bass cut offers adjustment of the mic’s frequency response.

Overhead, Kröger uses an AKG C214 Professional Large Diaphragm Condenser microphone that cleanly captures the details. It features a switchable 20dB attenuation pad that allows recording of loud sources of up to 156dB SPL, and a switchable bass-cut filter that allows close-up recording with almost no proximity effect.

As for vocals, they’re handled by a trio of AKG D5 Dynamic mics that feature the company’s patented Varimotion diaphragm.
